Rancho Margot

Rancho Margot
Rancho Margot is an eco-tourism project set at the foothills of the Children’s Eternal Rainforest near the shores of Lake Arenal. A combination of sustainable hotel practices, organic farming and creative engineering makes Rancho Margot a wonderful place to stay while traveling in this area.

Lake Arenal receives a steady supply of mountain-driven wind, and thus is one of Central America’s foremost windsurfing destinations. Aside from this, its waters can be plied for fish or skimmed over with a kayak. The nearby Arenal Volcano National Park offers wonderful hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities, and there are canopy tours and suspension bridges nearby that can be enjoyed as well.

Rancho Margot is one of the most advanced and sustainable eco-tourism projects in all of Costa Rica. The hotel was constructed with sustainable practices in mind and is a forerunner in the conservation effort: the hotel works in partnership with the Children’s Eternal Rainforest, operating a ranger station within its grounds. Additionally, Rancho Margot has a functioning dairy farm, pig farm and chicken farm; an organic vegetable and fruit garden; a medical plant garden; and a bio-digester, which is responsible for generating the farm’s natural gas and hydroelectric power.

Rancho Margot also runs an onsite animal rescue and reintegration center. This center receives animals that have been rescued by local authorities. Some of the animals are recovering from injuries while others have been held in captivity. The center’s goal is to get the animals healthy enough to be reintroduced into the wild.

Accommodations at Rancho Margot consist of deluxe bungalows and a bunkhouse. Located on a hillside, these lodgings are set up both for couples and families. They can sleep a maximum of four people and have access to both private and shared hot water bathrooms. All have terraces that are equipped with hammocks and sport excellent views.

The hotel’s swimming pool is built with river rocks and filled with pure water from a local spring. It is, quite simply, the perfect place to relax and take in views of the surrounding area. There is a restaurant and bar that serves up tasty, locally grown food and refreshing beverages, as well as well-maintained trail system that runs through much of the hotel’s property.
