The shortcut across Lake Arenal

The private road route goes around the lake via Tilarán, but most Anywhere Costa Rica travelers prefer our taxi-boat-taxi shortcut: a van to the Arenal Lake dam, a scenic 30-minute boat crossing with volcano views, then a van on to Monteverde, about 2½ to 3 hours door to door, and it can be arranged privately (private van and boat both ways) rather than on the shared daily departures.

Stops along the way (road route)

One hour of free wait time is included, popular for:

• Lake Arenal viewpoints along the northern shore.
• A stop in Tilarán for a meal or a break.
• A photo stop as the cloud forest comes into view.

Longer stops can be arranged for an additional fee, priced when you book.

Road notes

The road route winds around Lake Arenal and climbs into the cloud forest: narrow, sometimes unpaved near Monteverde, and best avoided after dark. A 4x4 is worth it for this route, and June–November rain adds potholes and slower going. The taxi-boat-taxi shortcut avoids most of this driving.

Vehicles

A sedan or SUV covers 1 to 4 travelers with standard luggage; a premium van fits 5 to 8; a Sprinter is available for larger groups or extra bags. Child seats are available on request.
