Arenal Volcano July 22, 2007 from the Observatory Lodge
With the Lava flowing on the West and South side of the Arenal Volcano the Observatory Lodge as well as other hotels in Castillo area have some of the best viewing angles. These photos were taken from the Observatory Lodge with a Nikon D80 camera, exposures times ranged between 1 and 3 minutes, no point and shoot cameras will suffice for night shots of the volcano.
The Observatory Lodge has a large deck attached to its restaurant which is a wonderful location to enjoy the awesome views of the Arenal Volcano. The Observatory Lodge allows non guests to come and view the volcano for about $4 per person payable at the entrance gate.
To determine the current lava viewing angle you can use our Arenal volcano map. Also on our list of Arenal hotels, be sure to click the 'lava view hotels' link there to see only those hotels with a direct lava view, as this changes depending on the volcano activity. There are a number of tours in Arenal that allow for a close view of the Arenal volcano - such as the Arenal volcano national park and the 4-in-one Arenal tour which includes a trip to the waterfall, volcano hike, and one of the hot springs.
