Lake Arenal Dam

The light on the left side is the dam of Lake Arenal.
The conical Arenal Volcano towers above the eastern shores of Lake Arenal, which has been enlarged to 3 times it's original size and now covers an area of 85.5km (33 sq. miles) for an hydroelectric project producing 70% of the electricity in Costa Rica with a capacity of 400 mw. That is why the dam was built. Administered by the I.C.E. (Instituto Costaricense de Electricidad, Costa Rica's National Electric Power Company).

Dam seen from the Mirador Lodge in Monteverde with a 300mm telephoto lens.
Dam seen from our taxi/boat/taxi trip to Monteverde
If you drive from Arenal to Tilaran or take our taxi/boat/taxi trip, you will see that the dam is also the main road.
