Feedback letters about Los Lagos:
I just wanted to let you know that we have returned from Costa Rica and that the various suggestions that you made and arrangements that you booked regarding Arenal all worked out beautifully. The shuttle transport all took place perfectly and the Los Lagos hotel was wonderful. We made a couple of excursions (e.g. the Sky Trek and Hanging Bridges) and had a great time. Thanks for your expertise and your help. Best regards,Rich Isaacman |

Los Lagos referral, CostaRica Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 11:35:31 EST From: Loisee@......com To: Arenal.net I want to thank you for sending us to the hotel Los Lagos a couple of weeks ago. We spent 2 nights there as you suggested. We were so glad that we had such a great view from our cabin. The first afternoon and evening, the Arenal Volcano was completely clear, a fantastic show as the sun set and we began to see the burning rocks crashing down the mountain. We would never have seen it if we'd stayed in La Fortuna. I've talked to many people who made short visits since who were so disappointed. Not us-thanks to your great advice! We enjoyed the Los Lagos trails too; hiking up the Rio de Lava and climbing the lava fall at the top was an amazing experience. Wildlife was abundant, particularly in the early morning on the El Congo Trail - howler and whiteface monkeys, coatis, toucans by the flock, and the extraordinary scissor tailed kite. We found it easy -and necessary--to hitch rides between the campground/trailhead area and the hotel; that's a long, steep, and sunny 2k. Thanks again for the swell recommendation! We have recently returned from our trip to Costa Rica and wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our 3 days/nights (Dec.24 - 27, 2005) in Hotel Los Lagos. The hotel and all it has to offer is even better than what is displayed in the website. The staff were the most pleasant and helpful that we encountered in Costa Rica -- they certainly made our stay special. The buffet breakfasts were delicious, as were the dinners. We enjoyed the pools and water slides, and the swim up bar. Our room (a premium superior) was large, clean and comfortable. The views were spectacular. Those 3 days were the highlight of our trip, and we could easily have spent more time there. Thank you for recommending Hotel Los Lagos....we will be recommending it to anyone that asks. It's not possible to do a round trip in one day to Monteverde Cloud Forest. La Fortuna (Arenal volcano) is at 300 meters above sea level, the Cloud Forest is at 1,500 meters (4,500 feet), straddling the Continental Divide. That's why the views are so spectacular going to Monteverde.
One way it's 8 hours by bus, 5 hours with a normal car (maybe not passable in rainy season, write for updates), 4 hours with a 4x4, 5 hours by horseback, or 3 hours by a combination of taxi / boat / taxi.
There is a lot to do in Monteverde Costa Rica! We suggest to plan half a day to reach the forest, at least a day to visit, then half a day to go to your next destination. Click below for details.
